Trailer Buying & Towing FAQs –
What You Need to Know Before You Buy
What size trailer do I need for my vehicle and towing setup?
Choosing the right trailer starts with understanding what your vehicle is actually rated to tow. Every truck or SUV has a maximum towing capacity, and it’s important not to exceed that once the trailer is fully loaded.
At Double J Trailers, we help customers match the right trailer — whether it’s a horse trailer, dump trailer, equipment trailer, or cargo trailer — to their vehicle. This includes looking at trailer weight, payload capacity, and how the trailer will be used day-to-day. A properly matched setup will tow smoother, stop safer, and last longer.
What’s the difference between a bumper pull and a gooseneck trailer?
Bumper pull trailers connect to a hitch at the rear of your vehicle, while gooseneck trailers connect over the axle in the bed of a truck.
Bumper pull trailers are typically easier to hook up and work well for lighter loads. Gooseneck trailers provide better stability and weight distribution, especially for larger trailers like horse trailers, flatbeds, and equipment haulers.
If you plan on hauling heavier loads or traveling longer distances, a gooseneck trailer is often the better choice.
How do I know if my truck can safely tow a trailer?
Safe towing depends on more than just the advertised towing capacity. You also need to consider:
- Trailer weight (empty + loaded)
- Tongue weight
- Brake system requirements
- Hitch setup
- Axle ratings
We always recommend confirming your vehicle’s towing specs and making sure your setup includes proper brakes and weight distribution when needed. Our team regularly helps customers in Washington and Oregon choose trailers that match their vehicle safely.
Do I need trailer brakes, and how do they work?
Yes — most trailers above a certain weight require brakes, and for good reason.
Trailer brakes help reduce stopping distance and improve control, especially when hauling heavy loads like equipment, livestock, or vehicles. Most modern trailers use electric brake systems that connect to a brake controller inside your truck.
If your trailer is equipped with brakes, your vehicle should also have a properly installed brake controller to ensure safe towing.
What type of trailer is best for hauling equipment or materials?
It depends on what you’re hauling.
- Dump trailers are ideal for gravel, dirt, and debris
- Flatbed and equipment trailers work best for machinery and large loads
- Utility trailers are great for general use and lighter hauling
- Enclosed cargo trailers protect tools and materials from weather
We carry a wide selection of these trailer types, and we help customers choose based on how they actually plan to use the trailer — not just what looks good on paper.
What should I look for when buying a horse or livestock trailer?
Safety and comfort for your animals should always come first.
Important factors include:
- Proper ventilation
- Divider systems
- Floor construction
- Trailer height and width
- Suspension and ride quality
We carry a large selection of horse and livestock trailers and can help you choose the right size and layout depending on how many animals you’re hauling and how far you plan to travel.
Is it better to buy new or used trailers?
Both options can be a good fit depending on your budget and needs.
New trailers come with the latest features and warranties, while used trailers can offer strong value if they’ve been well maintained. We stock both new and used inventory and inspect trailers to ensure they are safe, roadworthy, and ready to use.
The key is choosing a trailer that fits your needs — not just the lowest price.
Do you offer financing and help choosing the right trailer?
Yes — we offer financing options and work directly with customers to find the right trailer for their situation.
Whether you’re hauling horses, equipment, vehicles, or materials, our goal is to make sure you leave with a trailer that:
- Fits your vehicle
- Matches your hauling needs
- Can be used safely and reliably
We’ve been helping customers across Washington and Oregon for decades, and we take the time to get it right the first time.
